HELP PLEASE!!!!! Head gasket

Hi all hope someone can help. I have a 1998 (R) impreza turbo all standard. My problem is that my bottom rad hose came off while driving, the only time i knew something was wrong was when my blowers started to blow cold air the water temp stayed at about half way all the time. When i stopped and turned the engine off i turned the ignition lights back on and the temp gauge went up but not right in to the red. When i got recovered home i took a look at it and the oil has been cooked. the car will turn over but i know the gasket has gone as there is exhaust fumes in my header tank and it just blows the water out the top of the header tank.
Does anyone know how hard it is to replace the head gaskets
Could there be more damage (How hardy are these engines)
Or should i just put a new engine in and how easy/hard is the jobs in question
hope someone can help and any help will be very much appreciated
Thanks in advance
Mark.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!! Head gasket

engine needs a full rebuild pretty much, when the gasket goes it put prassure on the crank bearings and if they arn;t relaced you'll prob find 1000 miles later your crank lets go.

second hand engines tend to be a bad idea, you never truly know how they;ve been treated or how well looked after.

safest bet is a rebuild. but thats not gonna be cheap, 3k upwards depending on what you have built.

if you do have it built would be a good time to throw some decent rods and piston's at it which will mean you cn run 400bhp on the engine no probs. To do that you'll need to do other bits though.

it realy depends on what you can spend and what you want to do.

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!! Head gasket

prob will be cheaper, but bear in mind if you have an engine build it will be under warrenty and also you can treat it right form the getgo meaning it will last and last.

and as said also means you can do some internal tweeks to make it sfe to run more power

if the shell is tidy and the gearbox in good nick then you may fid its a good idea to get a build.

something i have thought of, did you buy it from a dealer or private? if from a dealer then you may have a warrenty or be entitled to your money back

Re: HELP PLEASE!!!!! Head gasket

Hi, i bought the car private so there goes any warranty, the shell and gearbox are in great condition and would be a shame to scrap it, im not to bothered about more performance as it is more of a family car than a "toy", i do have access and help to facilities to do the repairs myself so all standard parts would be fitted, do you know how hard a job it would be to do the rebuild also with the oil being cooked would this knacker my turbo should i get a new turbo or buy a rebuild kit for the turbo

For the hassle of it just get it done from a specialist as engine need to be cleaned fully internally when you strip it and will need specilaist tools to do the job right and a lot of time and effort would have to go into it so for piece of mind and with a warranty be just better to get your engine rebuilt by a specialist

Give API engines a ring and have a chat with David,
Im sure he will be able to advise on prices and routes to take.
