new gearbox?

hi guys. im wondering whether to go down the route of tryin to get 330 bhp with a tweak from 310bhp or to get a new gearbox well 2nd hand.
uk my00 turbo an its a long drive gearbox. my power kicks in full around 3.5k an want a shorter box. id rather do this then go for a map tweak as it will feel even quicker. i cant afford a 6 speed or ppg but would like a jdm 5 speed. can anybody recomend me a box but not the type ra. what else do i need to match apart from diff to. cheers guys an merry christmas

Re: new gearbox?

As i understand it, the JDM cars have slightly shorter ratios than the UK cars anyway so a I guess any classic box will give you what you are asking for. The shortest (non RA) ratios will be found in a box from a pre-facelift car. Transmission codes for those boxes are;

TY752VB3AA (WRX A)
TY752VB3CA (WRX B/STi 1)
TY752VB3FA (WRX C)
TY752VB4AA (STi 2)

Think all you will need beyond that is the rear diff with same final drive as the box.

thanks mate so do the diff have a matching code as the box then. id just like the power to come in quicker as in 3rd it just takes ages to get to the boost. once boost its great. have u tried or recomend a code which is prob best. i would like 1 from the 96 jdm wrx. my dads got that an thats a gearbox i like

Re: new gearbox?

TY752VB3FA (WRX C) is the box from the '96 car. The diff that goes with that box is the R-160 final drive 4.111. As long as you get a diff with the same final drive you should be fine.
