Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

I have all 4 tyres to replace on my Hawkeye WRX. Fronts due to wear. Rears due to a nail in one!

I have Eagle F1s on the front and happy with them, Fuldas on the back, hard-wearing but not so sure.

Since the tyres went on I have decatted, fitted induction kit, remapped, fitted alk, front and rear arbs and HSD coilovers, so the car is fundamentally different. Only finished the final bit, the wheel alignment, last week so haven't really had time to assess the tyres at all.

I need to get tyres asap as I can't run up and down the A30 on a skinny spacesaver!

I'm thinking Vredestein 225/45 zr17 on my standard 215 rims (they don't do a 215), and I understand that should be fine, but does anyone see any potential problems or have an opinion as to alternatives, particularly given what I have done with the car...

Thanks!

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

The Vredesteins seem fairly popular with Impreza users in the UK, can't get them here so no personal experience but think they will be fine.

Have a read through this thread where tyre choice was discussed recently;

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

vredesteins seem popular on alot of cars ive seen as well, thought theyre very pricey.

i myself own a modded wrx hawkeye the same as you and asked this exact questions the other day on here.

i had continental sport contact and found them to be crap in the wet..were great in summer.
so, i went for the toyo proxes t1-r.

first time i have ever tried toyo's but can safely say i will definately be buying them again.
the confidence they give me in the wet compared to the old ones is immense.
i took a full circle motorway on-ramp the other day in the pouring rain and it felt so stable. Im actually really surprised at how much i noticed the difference.

they feel very smooth on the arse, but at the same time i can feel every detail of the road though the steering.
seriously will be buying again (though if budget allows next time i'll give the vredesteins a go)

another toyo bonus is the price. ... go to UK Tyres Online: Discount Car Tyres | Blackcircles.com i always get my tyres there. i got mine for 83 nicker each, and that was in a 225/40/18... plus i got 16 quid off for being a return customer on top of the total.

oh and as for the 225 on a 215, its my understanding from researching about the place that a wider tyre will offer more grip, but less lateral G's. So you will indeed have a better grip on the road, but it will 'give up' quicker. Also i think the side walls become softer if you stick a wider wheel on, as they're not stretched as much.. that could all be complete bollo though, im no boffin at all in the tyre area. Thats just from info ive gathered in a massive search whilst in the same dilemma as yourself.

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

UPDATE- just had a look for you on blackcircles...

they do toyo T1-r's in your 215/45/17 and they're 91.38 each..... and they have a special offer of a tenner off if you buy 4 at once.

so the final price plus postage is 367.52 that, my son, is a lovely price

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

You're right, but...I've picked up 225/45/17 Vredesteins from Camskill for 335 including delivery which I am pinching myself about. To fit, valve and balance will be about 15.00 per tyre so 400 for the lot is, I think, a serious bargain. Particularly sweet as I took the wife's car to work today and, yes, picked up another puncture and another new tyre...

I'm hoping these are good as the Toyos sound...I've read (somewhere else, ahem) that the sidewalls are pretty stiff and Vredestein have confimed they're suitable. Time will tell.

Thanks mate.

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

Id never talk anyone out of F1s if your happy with them, they do give a good feel and wet grip is in the top 3, dry grip is much the much as any top tyre and they arent that bad for noise, shame they are a few quid more then most.

no vredesteins on the blackcircles site though? strange!
mocomracing.com sells them but you have to ring for price.

the other bonus of black circles is the more you buy, the more offers you get next time

Fiveskin,

What discs and pads are you using as matter of interest? I'm still on standard and they are not good at all...

Cheers.

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

I'm still on the standard too mate!

with things like that i wait til the standard parts blow then replace with an upgrade.

Though i dont know what im going to be upgrading too yet, i've not really researched yet!
Actually, i might do that now!

the standard WRX ones do feel a bit 'late' dont they.

Hair-raising I call it at times. I think mine are ready to go. There's a bit of grinding going on.

Re: Best tyres for modded 2006 WRX

Did you change the discs? I'm looking at just putting grooved discs on the front with maybe the ferodo pads all round.

Hey, this has changed from a tyres thread into a brake thread!

Back on topic, the Vredesteins are significantly quieter. However, the tracking is off again (just done full wheel alignment, doh) and the steering is lighter, which is unexpected. However, pleased so far.
