Thumbs up gearbox question

hello lads, just a quick question, im looking to see if a uk 01 bugeye wrx gearbox is any stronger than a uk 00 wrx classic box. i have one fitted to my classic with all the other running gear but want to know will it handle any more power than my earlier one.

thanks in advance for any replys.

Well im sure it will have different gear ratios still a five speed rather than the 6speed boxes in the new age sti imprezas but here a gearbox chart to find your gearbox ratios you need the gearbox number Subaru Transmission Codes & Ratios.

Re: gearbox question

The new age 6 speeds are certainly stronger, but couldnt say with any authority wether that also applies to the 5 speed. I would certainly hope so though.

got one in mine, same ratios as the original dif so no need to shell out for a matching numbers set,it should be able to cope well with the higher torque figures, have seen a standard WRX cope with 360+ lb/ft..

tad its slightly more than smidgin,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, lol

tbh they tend to vary depending on who and how there driven, peak torque isn't what kills them. It shock load. but i'd say around what ed says (360), clasic box i wouldn't push beyond 350ftlb. but even at this level you can still kill it if you get it wrong. mine died at 280ftlb, which was prob a slightly missed gearchange when giving large on unrestricted roads.

when you put your foot down and you feel it kick in the arse, that load is also going through the running gear. Sudden hard launches, load up the gearbox in nanoseconds aka shockload, anything other than perfect engagment between the clutch, gearbox and driveshaft and you chip or strip a tooth. the loads involved are magnified hugly because of how small the components are. Its not peak power, its shock load that kill the box's, that why drag cars break them much more than even race cars.
