Impreza stuck in park

I have a 1998 Impreza 2.2 L (Brighton) that is stuck in park. I checked the brake lights to rule out a faulty fuse, so I decided to remove the automatic gear shift assembly. I could not remove it completely but I did manage to take a picture of a ribbed rubber boot (coming from the front of the car) that looks like it should connect to a little bump (facing the rear of the car). You can tell I don't know all my terminology. I beleive that maybe the linkage cable is suppose to pass through the rubber boot and enter into the little bump? I will include the photo, it can speak better than me. The car did stick in park on two other occasions but I was able to eventually shift into drive.

Thank you ahead for any help. Oh, if it is the cable where is the best place to buy one?

Re: Impreza stuck in park

Best get it checked by a Auto gearbox specialist the gearbox control unit has a self dianostics facility and any fault codes can be read with the proper dianostic tool
