Oil

Quick question.
How much Oil does a MY99 Turbo hold?!

Took it in for a service today, was told when buying it, the oil was topped up, today, he had to put 6 litres  in it

Seems a lot to me?
Just wondered how low that would be compared to how much it could hold!

Mines an MY94 and it takes 4.5litres, I should think yours would be the same.
Six litres is way too much.

Lookin at the receipt, looks like a charge for 5 bottles, so that would be right about 4.5 litres put in then?!

Take it I took it in at the right time then, probably not a pretty sight, runnin with no oil !
Usually check, but got told it was ok, I'll learn

Cheers Olly, what would have happened if nobody had checked?! (although, I would have this week)!!!!

That was an oil change, not a top up....

Your car would have gone bang well before you had run out..... Anything less than about 3 ltrs and the oil pickup would have been having problems... and you would have been getting an oil light on the dash as well.

I think low oil is one of the ways of making your engines bottom end give out. Apparently the part of the engine where the crank is housed is very narrow compared to most other high performance engines This means it can suffer from oil starvation to the end bearings and crank, if the oil is low it just amplifies the situation.

Cheers guys, had noticed a slight performance drop (not sure if it was related)!
Least it should be nicely topped up now. Will have a look in the morning

The method of changing the oil is important too on Imprezas.

Have to remember to fill up the filter and let the paper element soak for half hour or so before putting it back on and filling up with new oil. If this isn't done the bottom end can get seriously damaged.

Well I imagine any decent garage used to dealing with Subarus will know this.

I know mechanics don't like being told their job but if you are at all concerned about stuff like that the best thing is to mention it to the garage when you drop it off as it could save you a costly repair bill!
