From engine designation D onwards Subaru dropped the compression ratio to 8 from 8.5

Thats when the first IHI vf Turbos were fitted...

Interesting as lowering compression reduces power... yet the power figures for these models jumped... good discussion point comeing

Reason for the lower compression ratios is that an engine with a high compression ratio is a lot more likely to suffer from detonation. This would be compounded with a high pressure turbo running relatively high boost, so the lower the better. Same reason we need to use high octane fuel.

Well well...

Higher compression = squashed molecules = better explosion = more heat

Higher pressure air or boost = more oxygen = better explosion = more heat

We understand..High octane fuel helps to stop pre-ignition aka pre-detonation problems (pinging) they are less prone to premature ejeculation, sorry meant premature explosion in the cylinder head and damage to the engine internals

But... the best way to increase power output in any given stroke is obtained by increasing the compression ratio...

OLD CODGER STORY COMEING

I once had the pleasure of working on and riding a TRITON m/c back in the 70's (Norton featherbed frame and Triumph engine) we raised the compression ratio by using Norman Hyde forged dome head pistons and sodium steel valves etc etc... and skimming the cylinder head... the result was an amazing 12:1 compression ratio....
but we could use good old full fat leaded FIVE star petrol.... so no issues with pinging and huge performance from a two cylinder air cooled 1930's engine design...

The down side was caused by our old enemy heat.. HEAT IS ALWAYS THE ENGINES ENEMY...

We had to bolt on x 2 oil coolers to ensure we did'nt cook the oil... and we also fitted an uprated hand built oil tank with anti slush fins (dry sump) and higher geared and flow rate oil pump... higher higher higher... the oil pressure and heat would shag the oil out (20 w 50 Castrol R) VERY quickly, so oil change every 500 miles Cant remember what plugs we used, they were Rudge or Champion and the grade was much colder than standard
The other engine bits were also strengthened, rods, bearings, clutch was so heavy duty it would hurt to change gear constantly, the gearbox was uprated and once on the move clutch less changes were the way to go.. the carbs twin Amal concentrics from memory and no air filters other than a fine mesh over the trumpets

Exhaust was a two into two with balance pipe... and no silencer slash cuts at three quater length

Kick starting this bike was dangerous... honestly, my friend broke his foot when it 'kicked back' it was a beast to start... best option was to push start the fecking thing...

Moderen turbo's and the control systems are just brilliant... they blow me away
When I think back to the old tech above... and then look at projects like the Prodrive P2 it makes me smile

You and my Dad would get on like a house on fire. At least he'd understand what you were on about regarding what you did to that bike.

The stuff him (he's a mechanic, old skool in that anything is possible and fixable) and his mates used to do to bikes and cars was crazy. He had some nice bikes mind you.

Nice looking bike though that Triton (followed the link). Really like the old Norton and Triumphs. Got a pic of me as a 2 year old on a Triumph, nowt special but still cool.

He, your dad sounds like a man after my own heart....

One of my all time heros had a film made about him... Bert Munro... and one of my favourite actors 'Sir Anthony Hopkins' played him in the film 'The Worlds Fastest Indian' a great film... sure you and your dad would enjoy it very much Wayne
