URGENT - help please

Right this is a few posts off a couple of sites im on i will add them together and let you see if you can help

-------------

Right on idle the car is making a "clanking, ratting" sound - BUT it doesnt seem like its from the engine it seems to be around the gearbox area.

Could this be the propshaft?

Seems to only do it on idle aswell or when going very very slow and it goes away after a couple of miles.

What could it be?

--

Took it round to my mates last night and it wouldnt do it at all. No noise at all

Started doing it on the way to work so i have made a small video of it and you can hear it. But it went away after about 20seconds

Its wierd putting the clutch in or out makes NO difference or havnig in gear makes no difference.

Just out of curiosity - If it was the big ends would they rattle occasionally or ALL the time on idle

The noise goes away when the revs are applied then when the revs drop back down its usually gone lol

Very mysterious

Manged to get a video uploaded of it at work :-0

Bearing in mind it goes away when rev'd just a little and this only happens occasionally

And ONLY on idle - it doesnt sound like its coming from the engine

Engine is running sweet and pulls like a train still

Doesnt knock at revs at all

-------------

Thanks for your time in advance people

Connor

Did you listen to the youtube video mate

Im worried its the bottom end but it confuses me its only occasionally and randomly and only on idle - tbh it sounded like it was coming from the gearbox are.

We decatted the car last week

What a pain

I dont know if this is coincidence but my crank pulley looks buckled on idle - If it is i assume it is the feared bottom end thats funked

Re: URGENT - help please

Also been speaking to a specialist in Forres who seems to think its not the bottom end as he said it would knock all the time not just occasionally.

He also mentioned about a tensioner on the front on the engine if its leaked oil it will make a knocking sound occasionally which can simulate bottom end.

I need to get the car checked over. so hopefully getting a Subaru dude to look at the car tonight

Re: URGENT - help please

sounds like there's something afoot underneath to be honest bud, just thought,it could be the gearbox cradle,as it sits on bushes n one maybe on its way out or gone..

Re: URGENT - help please

The Pilot is dead right on recommending Grade A; they're not far from me - I had a top radiator hose go on me, gave them a bell, and had a new one in the post the next morning, 15 all in....great company.

hope you get yourself sorted mate.

Re: URGENT - help please

Right had my mate round who has built a fair few EJ20s now and has said its 100% not the bottom end - We have driven the car for 45mins and its not made the rattle at all and that was from cold - Checked everything but cant find it but he said for sure its not the engine.

We are taking it to the farm to put it on the ramps at 7pm for another few checks aswell

Re: URGENT - help please

Sounds like the exhaust M8t after listening to your video checkthe middle section theres i metal cross member above the exhaust which rattles if its up against it and when idling or moving it vibrates through it sounding like a gearbox problem hope this helps /kev
