Re: hopefully not

350bhp your pushing it, mine belw at 280ftlb's, if it has low milage and well treated you may get away with it, but at that level of tune its not gonna take too much to kill it. but like all things there are some freaks that run above that for several years with no issues, and others that run below and still blow, its pot luck.

Re: hopefully not

there are clasic gearboxes running at in excess of 400lb/ft, you cannot say "it will blow up at xxx lb/ft"

Re: hopefully not

no but you can say after x, in this case about mid 300ftlb, its pushing it.

theres always odd balls that run more, but on the same note theres odd balls that run less (like mine for example). i know a few folks who blown there engine at lower power than you run steve.

so just depends how far you wanna push it.

Re: hopefully not

same with gearbox ed, if you crunch the gears then you'll kill it,a lso launching it will shoick load it and risk stripping a gear.

i have a feeling when mine went i might have snicked a gear without realising it.

more rally car gerbox's have been killed by a driver missing a gear than any have through mechincal faults. its one of the reasons prodrives wrc box rarley fails, human emlement is removed

i've seen a ppg straight cut box have 2nd gear stripped clean when shockloaded, was during competition, but just shows what can happen

Re: hopefully not

It is down to the amount of abuse they have taken rather then the out and out power as said,
Plenty of gearboxes go pop on standard scoobies because they are just abused,
If your smooth with feeding the power in and precise on your changes your fine.

Re: hopefully not

sometimes i crunch by accident because the way they are. my focus box was smooth but it fine so far. car has done 70k an i never really floor it so hoping it stays sound although id love a 6 speed box. or even a type ra box but not to keen on more wear an tear with the high revs. also can any1 shhed some light on this question. my dad has a 96 wrx import. it not a type ra but did they fit a close ration box in these like the type ra. i got the uk model with a longer box an dads is shorter, id say he does 3500rpm at 70 i think. is this a standard box in his or some1 put an ra box in it

We all make mistakes but to be honest thank god never crunched between changes in my RA yet and hope I never do, Gearbox specialist in the city here that we would always send broken boxes to, would always say that crunching between gear changes wrecks synchro after awhile he said the odd time wouldnt do that much damage cause a lot of boxes are very robust but if crunching gears all the time you wear the fcuk outa the synchro
