Trouble shifting into 4th gear!

Ok guys, I have noticed a strange problem recently with my gearbox. This only happens when I am accelerating faster through the gears. When I try to shift into 4th I can feel a slight grind and then it will go into place. I am fully depressing the clutch, and when I shift into 4th at a slower speed it goes in just fine. Any suggestions? :?

Thank u newie, that is a good suggestion. I was wondering if 4th gear has a synchro on it? I guess it has to? And I find it strange that only 4th does this, all the rest are fine. It's hard to describe exactly how it feels, but it's like there is resistance and a grinding feeling and then it will slip into gear. It happens quickly, and I'm afraid of damaging my gear box.

Hi Gears, sorry for the late reply to this.
My 02 had the same problem when I test drove it (It becomes a long story from there so i won't bore you with it) But yes its the syncromesh. There was a modification by subaru that was fitted to mine (5th gear too)

As your motor isn't listed below your avatar I cant help you with that, but I have the feeling you have a newish motor? Warrenty job if it is mate.

Hi guys
As you may know I had problems and they replaced 2nd,3rd on mine with modified parts.
As my dealer said they are known problems and MY03 cars on have the modified gears as standard apparently :? .

Gears.... If it under warrenty take it in and get it sorted, didn't cost me a dime....

Thank you guys, that is very helpful! I do have a late model '02 w/ 19K miles so it is still under full warranty. I will set up an appt to have them look at my car. But here is my problem, should I just explain that this only happens when I am accelerating faster? Or should I let them figure it out? And I'm not "speed shifting" or anything like that, I can attempt to shift into 4th slowly and I still get that grind feeling. I will let you all know what happens. Keep your fingers crossed!

Gears its just not doing what it is supposed too, plane and simple.

There is a known problem, there are modified parts, push em for a new box.

Worked for me but then it had been out twice before.

Agree with Buzz Gears - just tell them the problem and what happens when you experience it and say you want a new Box. They will no doubt be aware of the problem and sort you out accordingly.

Let us know how you get on

I will definetely let you all know what the outcome is, hopefully I will have some new gears when it's all said and done, or at least the 4th gear synchro will be fixed. I wonder how long that would take to fix?

Maybe I can just have them install a tranny from the WRC Impreza! 8) j/k

Ok guys, I have made a appt to have my car looked at, I will be dropping her off on Friday. Hopefully it won't take too long.

I will let you know what the outcome is, after talking to the tech on the phone my car may have to be in the shop for a while.
