Gearbox 1st gear whine,

So I woke up this morning jumped in the car and drove off and thought 'thats a bit of a strange noise'.

1st gear made a bit of a whine noise. The way to describe it would be, it sounds like the reverse gear syncro whine.. Other gears I think are ok though 2nd may very faintly do it (though could be my imagination).

When in 1st gear and fully dipping the clutch you can still here the whine (like reversing). Neutral and other gears with clutch dipped or engaged do not make this noise only 1st.

Any ideas or recommendations? I had the clutch changed a month or so ago but this noise only started this morning.

Dear diary 2nd August. Scooby is sick,, I am sad... Really gutted to be honest.

thanks
Angelo...

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Hmm, could it do it if the oil level is a little high?

Its hard to tell but I think its a little over. The droplet on the dip stick is below the min (but then it would be right, gravity etc?) and you can see that the dip stick is wet a little passed the full mark.

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Am I that unlucky that nobody else here has experianced this problem?

Is it possible that topping up with 400ml of 75w - 85 fullly synthetic gearbox oil to fully Synthetic 75w - 90 oil could have fouled things up.

Somebody please help me...... I can't even tell my wife for fear she'll make me sell by beloved Scooby and buy a VW Golf...

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Hi Mate,

I think the important thing is the oil needs to be a GL5 rating as far as i know,

I recentley changed my oill and it still hasent stoped to whining is it only noisy under load?

Cheers

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Hi mate,
No its noisey even just pulling off gently. It also makes the noise with the clutch down slowly approaching a junction.

Angelo.

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Could be the "clutch release bearing" Once you depressed the clutch the whine should go.

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Thanks for the reply Pete. Unfortunately the whine carries on even if the clutch is depressed, but only in 1st gear. It does stall or anything so clutch does disengage the box from the engine. I think its just the wheels turning that cause the 1st gear whine to continue. As I mentioned the other gears are fine.

thanks again and any more advise / help would be very welcome.

It sounds like the box than mate

You could try an oil change i used some millers GL5 fully synth in my one and it did help a bit

Its still noisy tho and has been for 5000 miles

Also it may be worth trying some gearbox treatment it tends to help a bit if nothing else may stop it from getting worse.

Let me know how you get on

TBH if its not to bad i woulden't worry

is it getting a bit tricky between 1st 2nd and 3rd?

Notchness here normaly meens a box rebuild and new clutch

Cheers
Derek

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Thanks Derek,
I think it is the gearbox too but wondered whether its a bearing, squared off teeth or even a sheered tooth. Not entirely sure what gearbox oil is in it though I do know that when I topped it up it was with Castrol GL 3/4 75w 85 fully synthetic oil, but it was less that half litre used.

There's no probs changing gears and even first drives ok, just that 1st is noisy in both drive and with clutch down gearbox dissengaged.

I will try changing the oil and see how it goes. Took the car to a "specialist" and he recommended just putting in a new/used box as it would work out the same as dropping and rebuilding my own box.

Very much doubt its not the clutch as all the other gears are fine. Clutch was only changed a month ago as was the release bearing.

I'll keep you all posted.
Any more suggestions welcome..

Cheers
Angelo.

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Hi Angelo,

I given the chance i would go for a rebuild

At least you will get some sort of garentee on it!
if you do go for a second hand box check to see if its the same gearing there are loads of diferent types i think.

Cheers

Re: Gearbox 1st gear whine,

Thanks for that Derek,

What I think I will do in the short term is to drain out the gearbox oil (to get rid of any broken bits of teeth etc?) and refill it with a good 75w 90 GL5 Synthetic oil.

Since the car drives and gears go in fine I think after draining it should be ok to drive a for a while longer. Once it starts to get worse I'll take it from their but I think a rebuild is the best option. At least I know its the right box for the car.

I don't expect miracles but a good oil may well take a bit of noise away. Can anyone recommend the best oil? Has anyone also have any experience of any of these gearbox treatment additives you can get?

cheers fellow Scooby folk. :- )
