Gearbox Whine on Deceleration

Hi, my 95 WRX Sportwagon has got a whine in first gear on deceleration only, does anyone know what this could be ?

Also, the gear stick is begining to get a little loose and the changes are not as positive as they should be, is this a simple case of new linkages ?

Many thanks for any help.

Matt

hi Matt

how long have you owned the car?

"some" whine on decel is very normal.... all Subaru's do this

as far as sloppy gearing, that's not normal
and the likely cause is worn syncros

may be time for a tranny refresh

Hi, I've not owned the car long. I traded my standard 03 STI for a classis 95 WRX import with some special mods.

Might be worth a trip down to my local dealer to get a quote then. The shift through the gears is very sloppy, it's easy to get 1st / 3rd and 2nd / 4th mixed up if you're not used to the car.

I guess this is a pretty big job then ?

Just been on to your website, I'm seriously impressed !!!!

Thanks, Matt

thanks Matt for the compliment

A gearbox tear-down and rebuild is a big job yes...
something left tho the pros

sure sounds like you've got some worn syncros - slop in the shifting.

Good news is that once this is sorted you'll probably never have to do this again as the car is street driven

unlike us rally drivers who typically need several gearboxes per year
