Hi All, i didnt know this site existed but i hope that it will be helpful. I have a 1999 WRX STi and it has been modified to 300bhp. The car is just awesome and has given me and my wife a year of trouble free driving but now there is clouds of smoke type stuff filling the cabin when we put the de-mister/heating on. It smells like the radiator when it is low or dry of water. The car did need a bit of water but the problem still happens, anyone got any ideas?

on various other searches i came up with "heater core" failure. Does anyone know about this or experienced it before?

Does sound like the heater core........ Not sure what is involved to replace though. Hopefully stockcar will be able to shed some light on the problem and the fix..

If you mean where to get one try

Stockcar (Alyn) at http://www.asperformance.com/

or

Grade A Subaru at http://www.gradea-subaru.co.uk/

or

Essex subaru Breakers at http://www.essexsubarubreakers.co.uk/

Thanks for that Pete.
I think i have found one new for £50+Vat but if you did know where it is on the car that could be helpful too. If only to stop the local garage deciding to add a few extra pounds on because it is a Subaru!!! Maybe it is something i could do myself??

I think its located right behind the lower center dash.

Auto A/C on the left. Manual on the right.

it is possible (as all things) to do yourself if you are competent enough, but is a pretty major job and requires the dash to be almost fully removed to sort correctly................bank on best part of a days labour

by your symptoms it is almost certainly the heater core

DISASTER! I have taken the car to the local garage rip off merchants and guess what. There was not a soul there that knew how to change the heater core so they all started to pull and tug at stuff and strip the inside of the car out. 6 hours later i had to leave and my car is lying on the floor of the garage looking like someone has dropped a very big bucket of mechano parts on the floor. It is in bits!! I have no idea when i will get my car back or if it will be okay when i get it back. WARNING.....make sure the garage or mechanic knows exactly what he is doing prior to letting them get their hands on your pride and joy.

Update......Now they can't start the car because they have done something to the Clifford alarm system. The heater core is still not fitted as they ordered it from Subaru @ £375 + vat because they say the part i got was the wrong one. I have had to send them the clifford manual for them to work their way thru it to find out where they have F****D up. All very good for them when they charge £30 an hour for labour! Is there someone out there with a red cape and a big S on his chest "SUBARUMAN" that can fly in and rescue my car from the ravaging hoards dressed in dirty blue overall's?

Maybe this web site should create a link to Named and Shamed garages so that other subaru owners throughout the country can avoid them. It could also list good garages! What do you think?
