Gear oil issues

Ran silkolene silktran syn5 in mine now for about 3yr however recently noticed that gearchanges arent as smooth as they were and reverse(although this is common to an extent)is a right pain to get so looking at changing to castrol syntrax in the nr future, read a few threads on scoobynet and seems a fully synthetic gear oil in a classic aint as good as a semi synth so im gonna give it a go-seems to be recommended by a few ppl as the problem with the syncros and fully synth seems to be its too sllippy to allow them to work correctly-noticed this after a lot shorter period when using mobil 1 gear oil when i first had mine-however thought the problems were over after changing to silkolene-its just took longer to be noticeable thats all.

Will be changing it in the nxt month so will let folks know how it goes

P.S. read somewhere castrol syntrax aint suitable for imprezas with DCCD,you`ve been warned.

would never recomend a semi over a full synth Dave.............think most peeps tried that after not having changed their trans oil for some time in which case chip fat would improve things!!

at 3yrs thats longer than i would normally run a gear oil of any description, i suggest 2-3yrs service period dependant on use
personal choice is Millers CRX 75w90 full ester synth.................

Alyn i really am open to any suggestions regarding gear oil ,regarding the 3yrs i think its actually 2 as i changed bk from millers as its what paul had put in at zen (after sorting 5th gear)and the gearbox were way too notchy hated the stuff felt much better with silkolene in untill recently-however im not convinced if i go for silkolene again it`l sort it and i cant really afford to waste the money on the syn5 oil for it to be the same, only done 25,000 in just under 5yrs an i dont rag it everywhere, gear oil is spotlessly clean though realise it may have lost some qualities however most of them miles are all fairly short running.

Cheers guys....... been looking at changing my gearbox oil for the last couple of weeks, but didn't have a clue what to go for.... semi or full synthetic.... now this topic comes up and throws a spanner in the works even more

Think my gearbox oil was changed about 3ish years ago and i aint got a clue what oil is in it at the moment

Think i'd better trawl the internet looking for gearbox oil prices

Hi,

The Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 can be too slippy for gearboxes with slightly tired synchros, the semi synthetics are more grippy by nature so grip the synchro better, the Syntrax will be ideal.

Motul Gear 300 seems to work well too, this is also a synthetic.

Cheers

Guy.
