Clouds of white smoke in rear view mirror.....

Driving along the motorway this morning, had only been going for about ten minutes (not thrashing it particularly but 'making progress'; had waited until it warmed up before revving fairly hard through a stretch of dual carriageway inbetween series of roundabouts, going fairly quickly on the motorway itself) when I noticed speed starting to ebb away as I drove up a fairly steep (for a motorway) hill.

Seemed unusual as I regularly drive this stretch and not had this problem before, speed didn't drop off dramatically but was being lost - revs were maintained, looked in rear view mirror and noticed puff of white smoke. S**t. Started to slow down more (my choice this time!) when noticed another puff of smoke....then another.

Got onto the hard shoulder and turned it off, left it for a couple of minutes and re-started it to see if just a temporary problem (more in hope than expectation) only for a massive continous plume of white smoke to be emitted from the exhaust James Bond smokescreen-style across all six lanes of the motorway! Not looking good.....

Only had the car for 5 - 6 months (a totally standard MY99 turbo) and as usual had thought about joining a recovery agent but not quite got round to doing it, so had to join at the roadside (which includes extra recovery fee) and wait for the recovery truck to pick me up.

He looked at it, and thinks it's 'just' the turbo and not the engine itself: oil level fine, nothing else apparently untoward under the bonnet. However, when took it to relatively local specialist garage they can't look at it until Monday so can't be sure until then.

Has anyone else had the same thing? Is it likely to be the turbo or the engine itself? And how much would I be looking at for fixing it.......

All replies/re-assurance greatfully received!

Cheers for those, waiting for the verdict today - I've got everything crossed!

Some of those threads are re-assuring (just a blown turbo) while one is particularly worrying (total engine rebuild!)

Once I've heard from the garage I'll post an update......

It's at Well Lane Turbo Centre in Batley, has a decent reputation (as far as I know!) for turbo and performance cars in the area. Just wish they'd hurry up and ring me!

No update on the car yesterday.....rang them late afternoon to be told they hadn't had chance to look at it yet as they were a mechanic short, have said it will be today - this is not doing my nerves any good at all!

The verdict is in: catastrophic engine failure..........

Can't believe it, only had it five months! Two previous owners, apparently regularly serviced with only 58000 miles on when I bought it which is below average for the year.

Can't remember the full details as when he told me the result over the phone I sort of went numb, I do remember him saying that when they took the plugs out, checked the cylinders etc. a litre of oil fell out of one of the cylinders and that two of them had no compression along with other things which I didn't really take in.....

He's getting me a quote on reconditioned/second hand/ non Subaru parts which I'm waiting, but he's given a rough estimate of three grand if I want genuine Subaru parts etc.......

Anyone else had this kind of thing happen? I've been recommended Scoobyclinic in Chesterfield which is relatively near, are they alright for price etc? Would it be easier to just get a second hand engine and drop it in, or should I recondition this one if possible?

All donations welcome!

Yes know the fellin m8 5 weeks ago mine started to smoke a little so went to garage and told me turbo has gone so spent 700quid on new turbo fittin etc thought everythin was ok but a week later it started smokin again so took to another garage and they did a comp test nothin at all on cylinder 4 so they stuck a camera init and found piston 4 was smashed to bits..all others fine..
I waitin for mine to go in maybe a week or so,, havin new block, piston, rings, oil pump, oil cooler, skim, belts, etc paying 2400quid fitted by HDC. So i spent just over 3 grand in month

Nightmare....I need to ring them back and see exactly what is wrong again, like I say I stopped taking it in when he told me the news! Wonder if I can get away with new block and associated parts etc. rather than a new engine etc.....
