Thumbs down Ideling problems

Hi, could some one please help or advise.
i have just bought a impreaz 2000 turbo awd non import on a 99 plate .
the car pulls well drives well but when ideling it is all over the place form 900rpm down to about 400rpm on the verge of cutting out , but it hasnt done so far. its has only one mod, a stainless stell exhaust. occasionally it will tick over at 800rpm for about 20 secs and then all up and down again. please help. thanks

many thanks for the help guys. at the risk of sounding think, im no mechanic, where about would i locate the maf sensor?

thanks pete, just one more question before start taking things apart.
going to the top link, two different persons unplugged the maf sensor, one of the cars stop running the other continued to run without the ideling problem. if the sensor is unplugged what should happen?

ignore my last as ive taken the plug to the sensor off and it settled down nicely. once again many thanks to you all.
