WRX Impreza STI '95 wagon import

Can I thank you for your responses! Fast too!
Because of the responses I received I've modified my questions to give a clearer picture.

I have a problem on my Scooby that I'm not able to solve. Anyone offer any suggestions? The problem I have is that intermittantly, the car will not start, sometimes (thats the challenging bit!) when it is warm and not necessarily hot. the car will always turn over on the starter motor and doesnt fire, sometimes! For eg. I drove some 400 miles on Monday, last week stopping 5 times. No problem with restarting. On the return journey I again stopped 5 times, twice it wouldnt start for at least 2 minutes and 4 separate cranking of the starter motor each time.
I have an independant Cobra alarm fitted, and their engineer who I have called out twice, assures me "its not the alarm"
I think its an electrical issue as petrol can be smelt. Ive been "advised" that it could be crankcase sensor, spark plug amplifier, immobiliser. I'm reluctant, as its an intermittant fault to take it to a garage and haver to spend a shed load to find out that they cant find owt!
My guess is that someone out there has had a similar problem and I can get to the root simply and I trust, relatively inexpensively. I live in the Poole, Dorset area and would love to hear from someone who may be able to put a handle on it. Fingers xed that there is!

mmm, could be any number of things, is it trying to kick in when you try to start it? aka is the starter motor working properly? might be a duff battery, alternator (although i'm told they go very very very rarely)

what part of the country are you in?

alsowho usualy looks after it for you?

Hi

Have a look at the air-filter and fuel filter they could be clogged ?

Ross (.org member) had a similar problem with starting.

As a shop owner I'll give a couple bits of advise....intermittent faults are a nightmare. We have to spend time, pay wages and overhead and then tell a customer it isn't duplicating right now. Very frustrating. You can do a little more to help. Next time it no-starts...takes 2 people though...remove a plug wire from the coil pack, place it next to the coil tower and have someone crank the engine . Watch for a nice blue spark. It should jump 1/2 inch or what...12mm ? Be careful as said spark will kick yer rear if you are holding the wire during cranking. Maybe have the friend hold the wire.... You will now know if it's electrical or fuel. You could also try and listen for fuel pump during cranking...remove gas cap and listen carefully. Watch for cameras as this will all look silly from a distance..

If the alarm has an immoblizer circuit, either spark or fuel cut, it could be the problem, I've seen it many times. Could also be crank sensor, fuel pump, plugged filter, relay, ignition switch, ECU, loose or burned wire connection. Good luck with a tough problem. Gene
