wheel issue

Hi I'm a newbie here I have an 08 wrx hatchback I've changed from 205x50x17 wheels to running a new set of 18 inch wheels with 225x45x18 tyres but have like mechanical noise coming from front diff all the time even at 5mph and same in reverse gear as soon as I put 17inch wheels back on there is no noise or vibration has anyone come across this before

do the wheels clear the brake calipers ?

Yes calipers are clear not a mark on new wheels when u turn round the noise stops which my mechanic thinks it's the diff he's baffled because when 17s go on you get no noise

it would do it with either wheels if it was the diff.
are they tyres the same size on both front wheels?

Are they wheel bearings good on the car ?

Yes new wheels and tyres are 225x40x18 old wheels are 205x50x17 I'm going to garage this afternoon so will get bearings checked but noise more of a clunking noise thank you very much for you're help might be worth changing both front bearings to rule them out

easy way to tell is find a 32 mm socket and see if the hub nut tighten up, if they or one does, it may point towards that bearing is failing.
