Exclamation 2001 wrx power loss??

Hi to all,
I own a 2001 Subaru Wrx which is stock apart from a vortex afterburner exhaust.
I have owned it for about a year and has roughly done 95,000 miles. First i thought that it was fast as i was new to scoobies, but when i went in my mates 2005 Wrx(stock) with 50,000 miles it felt like it had 300HP. It pushes you back into to your seat compared with my one.
*We were told that the engine had been misfiring and the gasket had gone in the up pipe, however these were fixed and only a slight increase was noticeable.

Does anyone know if this is due to some sort of leak, etc or if it is just natural due to the amount of miles it has done. Aldo, how to sort this problem.

Many regards
Scooby Works.

Re: 2001 wrx power loss??

if you had a leaking zorst gasket there will be obvious power loss, did the ECU get reset when the blow was rectified?..if not the ECU will be running as if the blow was still there,do a reset and see what happens,to find out exactly what she's doing, get her plugged in on a set of rollers and see what's really goin on...
also give it a good service, decent oil, plugshigh flow air filter,(it its not got one fitted) and see how she runs after that..

sounds like it needs further investigation to find out whats going on, hatch will hav a bit more power then yours and also it weighs less so it will be quicker.

Does anyone know if its to do with the wear of the bearings...as upgrading to some Cosworth ones would be nice.

Or could it be the coil packs?? I forgot to mention that the car has a dump valve.

Many regards,
Scoobyworks.

Re: 2001 wrx power loss??

what fuel are you using ?

if any of the coils are gone your cel should come on.

and what dump valve are you using is it the whoosh whoosh one lol. if it is go back to stock one if its atmospherics.

and if you are going for a map add some small upgrades to gain a little more power.

and make sure you check when the timing belt was changed last.

ccs works,

I use Shell V-Power,

The thing is when the car was brought the EML did come on and that was due to the MAF playing up. From after that point onwards no warning light comes on such as AT OIL TEMP, etc...

So, I'm only suggesting that I would need new coil packs because the car was mis-firing, which was told by a SUBARU dealer, and i think it is now. The problem is that when you put your foot down, you don't feel a certain kick out of the car which all Subaru's should do. It's like the performance is still there as I was nearly hitting 150mph on the motorway =D. You could phrase it as some turbo lag.

The dump is definitively NOT a recirculating dump valve

The timing belt was changed around 91,000 miles...so the timing belt has only gone roughly 4,000 miles.

The car has got a MODIFIED oil pump from 'graham goode', vortex afterburner from scoobyworld, NGK spark plugs, a custom(don't know what brand) panel filter...i think that's it for the engine.

I'd be checking for a boost leak. Also as mentioned above, refit the standard recirculating dump valve

I've seen a couple other threads which discuss the same problem i am having now...and to resolve this they've fitted the original dv, reset the ECU, etc but still have the same problem

Plus I brought the car with the dump valve therefore the original dump valve is nowhere to be seen.

Many regard,

Does adding a dump valve REALLY cause a problem?? I know it makes the car run lean...but isn't it there to keep the turbo spinning?

Re: 2001 wrx power loss??

A stock Recirculating DV knows exactly how much air to calculating to go back in to the engine to keep the turbo armed up lol.

And the atmospheric DV throws the air out and the ECU gets confused because the air which was measured by the sensors is no longer there so it throws more fuel thinking some things gone wrong with the engine. All so you will feel problem on takeoff it will be sluggish the car holding back.

It’s a sad truth but impreza’s don’t like aftermarket dump valves, unless you forged up and running plenty bhp that’s a different thing but stock ones are more than good enough for up to 300 bhp.

Re: 2001 wrx power loss??

Vent to atmosphere DV's don;t always cause issue's, but it is possible they can. if mapped with it on then it will be taken into account by the ecu, if not mapped for it then its pot luck if it makes a difference or not.

Re: 2001 wrx power loss??

I triad the vent to atmosphere on mine Tidgy before i went for the pro drive pack it was really bad experience lol. The car was horrible on take of and really badly lagging.

i would say you would need a magic wond to do the right adjustments on the vent to atmosphere one with out a remap.
