Exclamation 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

Hi,
I've just bought a 2005 Subaru wrx (blobeye) 55,000 miles the previous owner blew the top half of the engine cos the cambelts had exploded.

Im going to get the other top half of the engine and get it fitted, then have it rebuilded, get two cosworth head gaskets 1.1/1.2, remap it, install a front mount intercooler, boost controller, exhaust, panel filter, brake pads, injectors dont know what cc I need. For the exhaust will it have to be DE-catted cos i've heard that it will not pass an MOT.

I want to get it up to about 380-400bhp but will the standard turbo handle this power???? If not how much bhp can they handle, im guessing it's a TD04 turbo like most other wrx's. If I need a new turbo then im looking for something that's not too expensive but that's very responsive enough to beat majority of sportcars off the line, but also something that's good for top end speeds such as 180-190mph so it can keep up with them on the straights.

If i've missed out any mods that are needed could you state them. I will probably add more modifications in the future, but for now I need some advice.

Please reply ASAP

Thanks,
ScoobyWorks

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

welcome...if your after the 400bhp mark...best have deep pockets!!!

standard tubby will never get near the required figures

Garret GT 30 or 35..or the md or SC series...look to pay over a grand for a big bhp unit..

no need for boost controller on those figure, better of with ECU upgrade.simtec, syvec etc, with switchable maps,etc....

and where in gods name are you goin to be doing 180-190 mph??

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

I'm not going to go 180-190mph, but I want the car to be a bullet up to about 160mph, so that it can keep up with and maybe beat 911's, ferrari's, etc. Cos ive got a 2001 subaru wrx which i want to keep standard so that i can drive around town without it drinking alot of fuel.

Do you know how much HP the standard turbo can handle on a stock 2005 wrx, and if I didn't change the turbo would it damage my engine???

Thanks,
ScoobyWorks

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

standard tubby will max about the 280ish mark, depending on supporting mods...you won't be hitting 160ish for long..if mapped safely the tubby will not be an issue with the engine, but excessive boost will melt pistons, hole the block etc..
my classic will spank 911's,355's,astons etc...and its only 340ish...

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

So will the boost controller manage the boost so that it doesn't melt the pistons???

Also, I dont want to spend over a grand on a turbo so how much HP could I get replacing it with a sti turbo as they're cheep and many people have ran 400bhp on standard sti turbo and don't have that many problems.

Is there any boost controllers so that you can manage the boost pressure in the car??
Thanks,
ScoobyWorks

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

controller will work to but will need setting up by someone in the know..

you won't get 400 bhp with an STi turbo..they max out roughly at 350ish...as i'm running a VF35 from an 04 STi

i use a blitz datt ebc..does the job fine and can manage the settings..

Exclamation Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

Sounds good to me 350bhp will do if it can keep up with 911 turbo's,etc. If i put vf35 turbo in mine and do upgrades after will it affect the car???

I know that there's the vf22, vf23, etc, but which one's probably the best for acceleration and speed??

I tried searching that boost controller but i couldn't find it

Thanks,
ScoobyWorks

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

34 or 35 are both good on spool,34 has slightly more puff at top end...

best bet is do mods 1st then map,if you map then add you will have all sorts of problems and burn out your cheque book n credit card quicker than you can spank a monkey...

cool, Cheers mate...

can you only get them turbo's used and if so do you need any new piping, etc or just the turbo it self. Do i need to look out for anything when i buy it.

Thanks,

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

if your lucky you can find them online..it's just a bolt on unit, when fitted just drive OFF boost, not even a tad otherwise it could result in massive damage to all componants...just be warey of ones with shaft play..

Re: 2005 wrx tuning help needed!!

is there a big top end difference between the two???

I was thinking of getting a fluttervalve for the noise but i also heard that a BOV keeps the turbo spinning so it reduces lag. Is this right???

Thanks,
ScoobyWorks

not really just 34 just holds boost a few seconds longer..
