power steering pump gone after timing belt replacement

I just had my timing belt replaced on my 2007 subaru impreza and as soon as I get it back I am told my power steering was noisy and the pump needs replacing. I had no problems or noise what so ever before this, and now the continuous whine. I am a little concerned the mechanic might have not done something correctly to damage the pump.

Is it known for this to occur, or could the mechanic have done something wrong? I don't want to pay $500 for a replacement second hand pump when it may have been damaged by the mechanic.
