Intermittent overheating

I have a 02 bug WRX STI. The temp gauge always normally stays just below centre when warmed up. But in the last 3 or 4 weeks its started to rise up to over 3/4 of the way up and the fan is working overtime and this only seems to happen on short journeys when stationary in traffic (or drive through Maccie D's heh). Obviously the gauge drops back to normal then if Im driving. When this occurs, if i get to my desination and switch the engine off the fan is still working. This has happened on average about once a week and I use the car every day. Can anybody please advise.

Re: Intermittent overheating

air lock can be done by removing tank cap and running the engine up to temp, then will "spit" out any air in the system, just remember to that the heaters in the cabin up full, fans on full blast and deflect to the windscreen..

as for the therm,it's removal and test jobbie i'm afraid..

Re: Intermittent overheating

So to check for air lock, do i have to put the heaters on full on windscreen then? And if thermostat is that expensive, and is it something I can do as a DIY job?

Re: Intermittent overheating

Sounds like thermostat or the coolants life’s finished is the water brown if it is you got more rusty metal elements running in the water which is causing the water to cook up more then normal which might have clogged the thermostat up and the coolant sensor as well is your fans kicking in on the right time normally when the needles around the half or a little above half if you got more water then coolant in the engine water will thin out and turn in to steam while stationary or stuck in traffic water and coolant should be 50 50 mix or you can use ready mix coolant Have you got enough coolant in the coolant bottle or have you been topping it up with water hope that helps.
