Please help before I scrap my Impreza!

Hi everyone,

I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I love my impreza dearly, its a 1999 2.0 litre impreza but it's properly doing my head in.

For a while now its been letting me down.

This is what happens. I get in the car, I turn the ingnition, I can hear the fuel pump kick in then I turn the key and start the engine. And sometimes it starts up lovely and other times nothing, not a sound. I have just gone 2 days without it starting. I then went to it this morning and it started, just like that. I went to work and at 3pm it started, just like that. I got home and at 6pm when I wanted to go out I turned the key and nothing! I left it half an hour and it started!

It has got to the stage where I darent go on my own even to get fuel. Twice now I have had to abondon it at the pumps when it has refused to start.
I had a new car battery fitted last week and I put new batteries in my fob yesterday.

Can anyone give me any advice please. Just bear in mind that I'm a girl so please make your advice really really simple. I only love driving it, what goes on underneath the engine is completely alien to me I'm afraid.

Thanks

Re: Please help before I scrap my Impreza!

could be an alarm problem causing the immobiliser to cut in,do you know if it's the original alarm or an after market one??

when turning the key are the dash lights on or off, also does the engine turn with the key of is it just like having no power?

Thanks for the quick reply. As far as I know its the factory fitted alarm & immobiliser. Dash lights are on and the clock is still the right time. The engine does nothing, its like no power. When it does start up it switches straight on no problem at all

no worries

sounds to me like an earthing problem, has it had any "non" subaru mechanics work on it recently??

Re: Please help before I scrap my Impreza!

Had a new engine about 2 - 3 years ago. Siezed up after I had done around 70,000 miles. Trying to remember who did that. Sent it away somewhere but dont think its been doing this for that long but then again it has been doing it for ages now, at least 2 years thinking about it but its definately happening more and more recently. Before it was just one off's. Had the brakes done by a non subaru garage and some wheel bearings?? squeaky and banging noise when I applied the brakes? That was maybe last year or the year before?

Re: Please help before I scrap my Impreza!

got a funny feeling its an earthing fault,i had the same problem on a 106 Pug a few years back, that was cutting out whilst driving, ended up putting in a complete new earth system and problem solved as for the brakes sounds like them seem to be constantly re seating themselves and not copperslipped(lubed)..just had another thought but in theory should have been picked up on previous MOT's,thought is:- has part of the wiring loom got trapped between something in the engine bay during the engine refit and obviously with constant driving the trapped part is finally wearing through causing a short??

to be honest,if i were you i'd take her to an auto electrician and see if anything can be found.

without seeing the car it's hard to pin point the problem..

Thanks, have been thinking about an auto electrician. I just dont want them to think I dont know what I'm talking about (which I dont but thats just between us)! so your info is great. If it is an earthing problem is it expensive?

Re: Please help before I scrap my Impreza!

should only be a couple of hours labour to sort it plus cost of consumables(ie cable, connections etc)..
at least you've got some ammo for them now
