Help, overheating wrx

Since owning the impreza the coolant temperature has come upto midway on the gauge within a few miles and never gone higher.

Now today I drove 5 miles and the gauge read maximum. Took it home and checked the hoses and the top rad hose was hot but the lower one was cold.

Where is the thermostat on these cars, hoping it could just be that, or maybe a air block although can't see why it has all of a sudden happened. Nothing has been done to the coolant system since last service about 5 months ago.

Cheers.

Cheers, without taking it apart and checking, is it possible to remove the thermostat from the housing and refit so I can use the car until I get a replacement? Thanks.
