newbie questions about wheels

HI folks, hope some of you out there can help a little,

looking for spare wheels to put onto a sub impreza sport (N reg)

going out to France for the winter season, my thinking was to put winter tires on spare wheels and swap them either here before leaving or take them and change them nearer the Alps,

would like to know any advice on what wheels can be fitted (i.e. original or non Subaru) or if steel wheels would be better than alloys?

any advice will be gratefully appreciated.

Re: newbie questions about wheels

Cheers for all the replies. Yep, its 15's that's on them. More than one friend is suggesting I might try a (non subaru) wheel which would let me put narrower tyres on. And that would be better (for grip) than matching the 195 width tyres that are on it now. I got dead confused because I though width = traction ... not width = 1/traction !!

Re: newbie questions about wheels

ok now looking again at tyres, originals are 195 60 15 but could i go to 185 65 15 profiles (found some at a decent price)or would this start to foul the bodywork? any suggestions of what sizes might work?
or could I go down to 14" wheels with larger profile tyres as have found 14" Impreza wheels advertised. any idea if they would they fit over the brakes?
