Head Gasket change

Hi guys,

I need to change my head gasket on my 94 import wrx, tell tale signs :-(

Now I'm guessing that the above car as standard has steel 0.5mm gaskets? Can I change these for some more heavy duty ones say 1.3 or 1.6 mm gaskets without any problems? Also what will I need apart from the gaskets to do this job correctly? Cylinder bolts etc?

Regards Gareth

Re: Head Gasket change

the thicker gaskets can be fitted, iirc you don't need to change the studs, but most do for peace of mind

this tells you what a kit comprises of :- SUBARU - IMPREZA 2.0 TURBO (GREY IMPORT GC8/GF8 EJ20G EJ205 '93TO'00) - SERVICING PARTS, TUNING SPARES & SERVICE ACCESSORIES - Complete Head Gasket Set IMPREZA 2.0i Turbo GC8/GF8 EJ20G EJ205 93 TO 08/1996 Import :: 183.90 :: Subaru Impreza Turbo Par

Re: Head Gasket change

also advisable to change crank bearings as well, on higher milage they tend to get put under too much pressure when the gasket goes

Re: Head Gasket change

Thanks tidgy, where could I get a crank bearing from? Is it a case of getting one directly from subaru? Or if you have any links I can look into that would be much appreciated. Regards Gareth

Re: Head Gasket change

Hi again, i hear that ACL bearings are good. Do i really need to invest in this spec bearing on an engine thats done 100,000 miles? Would i not be better looking at a cheaper alternative incase the engine doesnt last after the gasket change? Also which bearings would you recommend changing? Theres main bearings, big bottom end, back bearings, theres quite a few!!

I also wanted to ask, when changing the head gaskets, if i invest in some more heavier duty gaskets, do i need to invest in a complete set or can i just buy the main gaskets ie

STI subaru impreza steel motor sport head gasket 1.3mm on eBay (end time 11-Nov-10 16:58:22 GMT)

Sorry to be a pain, just this is all new to me.

Regards

Gareth
