Re: Remote Start
I have Toad alarm with that ability, I never wired it up, when I was looking through the pages and pages and pages of documentation, it didn't say it was illegal or it invalidates your insurance, what it said is that it invalidates the alarms CAT1 status, which technically I guess invalidates your insurance, unless you don't tell your insurance company you have a CAT1 alarm in the first place, then nothing is invalidated ...

Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, Regulation 107 (1) No person shall leave, or cause or permit to be left, on a road a motor vehicle which is not attended by a person licensed to drive it unless the engine is stopped and any parking brake with which the vehicle is required to be equipped is effectively set, unless exempted by paragraph (2). (2) The requirement specified in paragraph (1) as to the stopping of the engine shall not apply in respect of a vehicle: (a) being used for ambulance, fire brigade or in England fire and rescue authority or police purposes; or (b) in such a position and condition as not to be likely to endanger any person or property and engaged in an operation which requires its engine to be used to: (i) drive machinery forming part of, or mounted on, the vehicle and used for purposes other than driving the vehicle; or (ii) maintain the electrical power of the batteries of the vehicle at a level required for driving that machinery or apparatus. If the car is on private land or the public road and its nicked with the engine running (without anyone attending) you are not insured. |

Re: Remote Start
if you go for a cat 1 alarm with remote engine start certain models are still cat 1 and dont invalidate insurance as even when started the car is locked and if the accelorator is touched or the brake it cuts out.

All alarms, immobilisers and "remote start" must have EU Directive 95/54/EC and EU Directive 95/56/EC approval to even be tested by Thatcham, and as far as I can establish only one meets that critiera; the Clifford G5 Avantgaurd 5.5 Intellistart. EDIT: Toad claim that a variant on the Ai606 called the Ai606 Interstart (only availible from Toadalarm) retains CAT 1 status. All other CAT 1 alarms (as far as i can tell) lose there CAT 1 status when remote start is added / used, as the remote start itself does not have 95/56/EC approval. The safest bet if remote start is going to be used is to email / phone Thatcham and your insurance company. Last edited by gc8_wrx; 14 Oct 2010 at 05:04 PM. |

Re: Remote Start
The clifford one was the only one i was aware of that retained cat 1 status with intellistart, but i didnt want to say they wernt any others as i wasnt sure. You cant go wrong with clifford to be honest. In south yorkshire Source Sounds is probably the best authorised installer im aware of. Paul own the company and he is a sound bloke
