Buying a used impreza

Hi guys

Glad to be here; thought this the best place to start.
My gf used to have an impreza and were thinking of buying one for us both to use - we particularly would like the station wagon version early version impreza that looks a bit like an estate, and would like some input on what to look out for. I'm thinking of a 2000 model. Ant help appreciated.
Cheers
Jim

Re: Buying a used impreza

Hi Jim and Missus welcome

You know your both going to start fighting over who drives

I wish i joined this site before i got my WRX as the advice and links are invaluable, saying that i have been very luck and only had some chips on the windscreen.

See the checklist link below it covers everything and i'm sure some of the guys on here will tell you if there's anything else to look out for.

Subaru Impreza - Buying Checklist

I wish i had it when i went to buy mine, would have looked like a pro scooby driver asking some of the questions

Uk spec 98/99 models cant either mate, i found out the hard way after i bought one. The uk 2000 AWD turbo models. only way is aftermarket ECU.

The early v2 sti could have a piggy back chip where as teh 98/99 models cant

Re: Buying a used impreza

0000-1996 can be daughter board mapped
1997-1998 can't be mapped
1999-9999 can be ecutek'd

i believe a fix is being done by ESL to allow a daughter board to be fitted to the 97 to 98 to make them mapable.

first port of call, whast your budget?
second, what do you want form the car? balls out performance or performance with a little less rough edges.

The standard ECU will need a daughter board, yes. Other than that you will have to go aftermarket.

check to see what service is coming up, you may have to face a big bill shortly after purchase if the cambelt and tensioner need changing and a big main service is close at hand.
Check for any modifications and check against receipts so you know exactly what parts and whats been done if any.

Are we talking UK turbo? or import WRX or STI model?

Andrew
