PROBLEM WITH REAR LIGHTS

Hi just bought a impreza sport 1999, got home and the rear lights and break lights dont work, when i checked there is a bulb missing and the unit was unpluged! when i pluged it back in the one with a bulb just stays on when lights and ignition are off!! any ideas what could couse this? the indicators and reverse lights work ok.thanks

id say you have wiring or connection probs,check the bulb holders and the wiring!has it had a tow bar removed or they cut some wire etc look for tell tale signs
