Urgent Help needed with engine change problem!

Hi All
I'm posting this on behalf of a mate, Mike who is in a bit of a mess and one/some of you may be able to help.
He shredded his cambelt on a 2ltr Impreza 1999, non turbo (interference engine) - out in the south west of France a couple of weeks ago.
He purchased an engine from a scrapper up North which he then replaced the cambelt and plugs and all looked good, plugs clean engine turns over ok etc). He has now driven down with it and replaced the blown engine in someones drive in about 3 - 4 hrs which is pretty good seeing as he had not done it before.
Oil and coolant all in and checked, spinning the engine with the leads disconnected everything sounds hunky dory (plugs in so compression). when he starts the engine there is a loud scraping noise - I've heard it over the phone and its not nice. So far he has checked the cambelt and it is perfect, and the cam timing is spot on. He is currentlyu going to pull the engine forwards again and check that the clutch/flywheel assy is ok (he replaced the entire assy from his old engine as he had a nearly new clutch in). In any case, depressing the clutch makes no difference to the noise, and he can currently select gears and move the car using the clutch. I'm clean out of ideas, and am just about to go racing at Castle Combe.
If anyone has any sensible ideas please, please give him a ring on 07837437140 - he's feeling a bit lonely and confused right now!
Thanks guys
