Turbo Question

Howdy fellas

Just wondering about my turbo the other day when I was driving pretty hard around town. I let the car idle for about 5 mins before turning off the ignition. This isn't a practice that I normally do and had some conflicting advice. It felt like a good idea after hard driving to let the turbo cool down but my normal driving is 'sensible' and I don't run the turbo hard. My mechanic told me never to turn off the engine as soon as I stop to give the turbo some time to cool but is this really necessary after normal driving?

I don't want to go down the timer route as leaving my engine running where I live would just be suicide!!

Is it enough to drive around a little at low revs before parking up?

Re: Turbo Question

driving steady for the last few miles is better than leaving it idling, allows all the fluids too circulate and cool, rather than just the oil.

Re: Turbo Question

We've had this discussion many times before and the outcome is usually that it is best to drive last few mile nice and gently to let it all cool down.
Most people live in 30mph zones too, so it shouldn't be an issue. Keep the right foot for the open roads or the track !!

Re: Turbo Question

Cheers fellas, needed to put that to bed. What gave you the impression I exceed speed limits?

Re: Turbo Question

Not directed at you fella, just a point that most of us live in 30mph zones so should be a nice gentle roll home last few miles. Got a nob where I live that rips through the estate, still haven't found who he is.
Glad we helped though and saved a few pennies on a turbo timer too
