Question Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi folks,
I recently bought my 04 STI PPP, which has 34k miles. I rang to book a service and they said that it might need a timing belt, that the recommendation is 60k miles or 5 years. They also quoted a cost of 1200 euro if it does need to be done.

To me this seems massive amounts of money for a timing belt change (with whatever tensioners etc that might need be changed as well). They said the big part of the cost is the labour, as it takes 5.5 hours. They are a subaru main dealer and labour costs are 80 euro an hour.

I'm going to get the general service done anyway (new car, want to make sure it's all as it should be), and if they do say the timing belt has to be done, I may get that done elsewhere for cheaper.

This has all come as a bit of a shock. Should the timing belt be changed with time even if mileage is low? Should it cost that much or take 5.5 hours?

Thanks.
Stephen

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi

1200 euro Thats very expensive, as an example, a few years ago it cost me 575(ex vat) for Air filter, oil filter, oil change (Millers), Gear oil (millers), diff oil (millers), sparkplugs (NGK), tensioner, timing belt and labour.

I used a local motorsport specialist rather then a main stealer.
As for when you should change your timing belt, i'm under the impression that its around the 40k mark, but i sure somebody will be along soon to confirm or deny.

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Just had a quick look on the net at Roger Clark Motorsport for a comparison. They charge 416(inc vat) for Belt, coolant, engine oil, filter and 3.5hrs labour (they say every 42k or 4 years for belt change).

If i where you I'd do the fluids, plugs and filters yourself and get the belt done elsewhere.

HTH

PS. Welcome to the site

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi, their is a wealth of knowledge on here and am sure the peeps will give you their input. Parts can be ordered seperately, Belt, Tensioner etc as a kit. Scoobyclinic for one, then it might be worth exploring the option of having an experienced mechanic fit the parts. Over here were lucky with alot of specialists that take pride in Scooby work. I for one use the specialists now over the Subaru dealer, purely down to costs - it does not mean though that quality is compromised. A kit I think would be obtainable circa 300 euros.. Hope this helps a little - Ben

Your car is out of warranty - madness taking it to a dealer. I believe (correct me if im wrong) that a member on here Darren (stiimpreza) lives in cork and is a mechanic - he also drives a subaru and seems to know his stuff. I would chance him for the quote for the work.

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi, I'm at stage of timing belt being way overdue cause i was told 60,000 miles or 4 years. I bought it with 55k over a year ago and its now 5 years old so, think dealer should have done before i bought if i had realised sooner i would have made them do it!!

I was quoted 350 for service and timing belt from main dealer but seemed too low, figured they must have got it wrong so uneasy at giving it to them.

Luckily i work for a massive car company and get parts cheap the timing belt alone is costing 120 from the main dealer but they told us that you dont really need the tensioners, if you get a good mechanic they can use white grease?! I have sourced a brilliant grease monkey who has agreed and he will charge around 200 to fit.

Do you think that sounds right no tensioners?

No, check it is the rule not just assume its good, You dont have too change them but its not the belts that ever snap its the tensioners that go,
also make sure they whip ur oil pump off and check the back plate screws arent loose.

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi folks,
Had a chat with John (who Darren recommended) this morning. Seems to know exactly what he's talking about (as far as I can tell anyway ) and I'd be happy to leave my car there.

We had a chat about the timing belt and tensionsers. He said in general there isn't any problem with them. Most people do the belt alright to be safe, but the tensioners can just be checked. Apparently they're metal and there's nothing running off them, so they are under a massive amount of stress. He said if they do go they tend to show signs long before they fail.

So I'm going to get the car serviced tomorrow and he'll check the timing belt etc and also my diagnosis of drop links needing replacement.

Thanks for the recommendation, and for probably saving me a few quid

Steve
