Spoke to my mechanic today to ask what exactly do i need he said: timing belt, tensioners and water pump. When i mentioned about tensioners he said exactly what you said about the tensioners rubber seals. He said he wont do the belt without them. So, i wont be doing belt without them now cause i know i can trust this guy.

Can't get over why the subaru dealer would say you just need white grease to get the belt on withour tensioners

its not 100% that you have to change the tensioner, it's dead easy to tell if its going or not, if you can see fluid then its duff.

as far as the white grease sounds liek there trying to get away with not undoing the tensioner to get the belt on, what slips on can slip off so sounds like a daft thing to me.

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

I paid 250 EUR for SKF kit (tensioners, idlers, belt, water pump (did not come with kit, so i ordered it separately)). I replaced it myself so i'm not familiar with labor costs, but it is 2-3 hour job.

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

The prices i got for Subaru timing belt kit from dealer which doesn't include water pump is 290 and 155 for Subaru water pump, they quoted me cheaper alternative 70. Labour is 3 hours at 180 not from Subaru dealer though.

Think i'll buy the Cosworth Kevlar belt around same price, think it will last longer.

Goign by the searches i've done on-line i dont think 290 is that bad it's just the water pump that really pushing the price right up

Re: Timing Belt Change Cost

Hi folks,
It's been a few months and a few thousand miles now and I'm thinking of getting the timing belt done...better safe than sorry!
Checking out online at kits available and the ones on scoobyclinic seem pretty good value...CambeltKit and Cambelt Tensioner. Is it a cambelt kit and cambelt tensioner down at the end of the page I have to get?
Thanks.
Stephen
