96 sti tick over problems

My 1996 wrx sti 555 has developed a bit of a problem. It sometimes ticks over at 900rpm, then other times 1000rpm and sometimes 1200rpm no matter how you drive it.It doesn't fluctuate it just stays constant. You can get the revs to drop slightly by letting the clutch bite a bit then dipping it again. It also sometimes has rpm increase surges of 300 rpm when dipping the clutch to change gear. Also when driving along in say 5th gear and you drop to 3rd and plant your foot on the floor to accelerate hard it doesn't have much kick and seems to lag at bit. I've noticed that it doesn't pull how it used to also. The car has only done 35000 miles so what could this problem be caused by. Where is the idle control valve on this engine so i can see if it is sticking.

cheers for any ideas

hi and welcome to the site.

Sounds like its a sensor problem, maf or 02.
The 02 sensor can be unplugged, and if the fault stays then its not that one.

Any ecu faults showing?
on the steering colum down by the pedals there should be some black plugs, you need to connect them and turn the ignition on but not start the car, the engine light will flash giving a code if there is a problem, we need to know what the code is.
