Service & Brakes

Howdy fellas

I have searched around but still didn't find all the info I needed hence the post.

Firstly, the local subaru specialist uses shell semi synthetic oil which they said was the best. Oilman seems to recommend silkolene Pro S 5w-40 or 10w-40, so not sure what would be best.

I have a 2000 Impreza Turbo w reg, unmodified apart from the ninja backbox & sti alloys. I do general town driving nothing major and tear up a few dual carriageways when I get the chance I run V-power for fuel (sometimes ultimate if not convenient). its approaching 60k miles.

So what oil and filters would suit me and do I need plugs? Cambelt has been changed.

Secondly, brakes. I have standard brake set up and I'm thinking about stepping up a level just solely for stopping power. A mechanic told me to change my disks while most people say I should upgrade the pad to mintex 1144. I'm not sure if these pads are too much of a step up or not. Should I change the disks? I dont think I need grooved or drilled disks but without checking them all properly I dont really know if I need to change tham at all.

Sorry about this I'm a used to be petrol head whos getting back into it at 37!

I will be doing it all myself so is there anything else I need to consider?

Re: Service & Brakes

With regards to ur oil you can use either really, 10/40 or 5/40if of good quality will do the job,
Nothing fancy required I used to run some 10/50 on my classic so ur well within spec with a 5 or 10/40,

Again with the pads a Mintex 1144 is a good well priced pad, you can spend up to 200 quid on pads if you listen or read everything,
For what you have put then they will be fine I would say change the brake fluid while your messing, esp if you dont know how old yours is now, if your feeling flush a set of braided hoses really makes the brakes feel better.

Re: Service & Brakes

Hi mate,

In terms of oil, I would go with Oilman's recommendation and use a fully synthetic oil. I use Motul 300V (10W 40) in mine and the engine is still running beautifully at almost 90,000 miles. Can't comment on the Silkolene as can't get it here, but it is very highly rated.

As for filter most in the UK seem to use the oem filter. I use a Syms filter. With the plugs would depend when they were last changed. I change mine every 12 months as per Subaru's recommendation whether they need it or not. Personally use NGK's in mine, and they seem the most popular choice for Impreza owners.

I would also check when the gearbox and diff oils were last changed. They should be done every 2 years at the very most.

As above and I use the 10w 40 castrol magnatec oil find it v good also use the oem filter, could upgrade pads to ferodo ds2500 have them in mine, nice bite off them cold and hot, not a lot of dust and long lasting depending how you use them and not to hard on disc

Same choice of Pads here Ds2500 .... 10w 40 Mobil fully synth used in my block... I use OEM oil fillter

Fluid changes vital to longevity of engine/box/diffs/cooling system etc etc but only if good replacement fluids used...

Also use NGK plugs (one grade colder) and change yearly

Hope this helps
