Is there anyway...

...of stopping the turbo spooling up?

I think it is on its way out (as mentioned in another post) not had chance to check the shaft...but there is a horrid grinding/metalic spinning noise coming through the bulk head.

Just if it is the turbo...i need to buy a new one...and fit is....and map it...and that is cash that the enemy has her eyes on for flowers and smelly candles.

Any thoughts?

Re: Is there anyway...

You can disconnect the actuator arm from the wastegate - this will remove virtually all boost.

Re: Is there anyway...

i take it that won't stop the turbo spooling though?

I just don't want to damage the engine or damage the turbo anymore and would ideally like to stop the noise until someone can look at it!

Re: Is there anyway...

You need to either get the downpipe off or the inlet pipe off to get to the wheel.

neither of which seem to an easy job! Ha. I think i'll leave it and take it to the garage. Will it do any damage if the turbo is gone?

Re: Is there anyway...

right well the day got better, then got worse!

Got the down pipe off. Turbo is fine. Investigated the noise some more...

Decided it couldn't be a turbo problem because on idle its fine, parked up rev the engine, its fine. So next up, gearbox. More promising because the noise was only there when driving, but ruled this out because the noise didn't change pitch with gear changes. So that left the diff. Which i couldn't really check. So off to the garage...

30 mins later, they produced a cup full of the worst looking and smelling oil i've seen (bear in mind the same garage had rebuilt 5th gear and changed the clutch 3 months ago). It was full of tiny bits of metal too.

So the garage reckons the damage is either the bearings or the diff itself. And it isn't covered by the warranty! They are going to want 150 to take the box out and whatever the cost to fix.

I'm a bit gutted to say the least. Fixing the box last time cost me 1000 and the work done before cost the same so all that and a few others bits its cost best part of 2500 to ''fix'' and i've not even started any modification work!

There is a small silver lining, to get a second opinion i took it to a jap car specialist who has come highly recommended. I mentioned the surging problem and straight away pointed to the maf, to which i said, it has been changed, 90 for a brand new one. To which he said, the one installed is a cheap knock off one that cost half the price.

Its a good job i love my car or i'd have burn it by now!
