check engine faults when cold {Help}

I've got a 94 import impreza. Allways starts ok then a check engine fault appears and engine nearlys dies.. even the cooling fans start up.But it's ok once it's warm. Any ideas anybody ?????

Hi mate

As Gareth says you can check the thread above but you will need to plug together your ECU plugs which reside and the bottom of your steering column. I believe the black plugs are the history read plugs - you will need to connect JUST these and switch on the ignition but not the car and you should see the check engine light flash intermittantly. If it does then you have a fault code !!

Most common fault with these symptoms is the "temp sensor", for the ECU. Its the one with two wires going to it, not the "singlewire", which merely sends signals to the temp guage.
