Question Going to buy a subaru and convert it to sti. need your help

Its hard to find original STIs in my country for a reasonable price. mostly due to gov tax. and even hard to locate a good subaru for sale. Most STIs in my country are conversion from impreza to STI. I have several options. I found a 96 WRX for sale. I could buy it and convert it to STI (I guess!, i dont know much about subaru models and specs!)

and also i found some 99 impreza for cheaper than the WRX 96. And I heard the local angent for subaru is doing conversions also!

96 WRX is more costly than the 99 impreza. what kind of changes do i have to make if im going to convert WRX to sti?

and is it worth going for the 96 WRX instead of the 99 impreza and converting it to STI?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Going to buy a subaru and convert it to sti. need your help

Their is alot of knowledge on this site, which will be able to assist more than myself. But in my opinion a good WRX with the correct modifications - subject to budget will achieve STI power so I would not put so much emphasis on an STI conversion. The WRX in standard form is a very capable car, and with the correct upgrades would be the way I would go - In fact, that is the way Im going. Good Luck - Ben.

In my opinion chap I'd save the money and get an import if they are really that hard to get hold of locally. Otherwise your looking at a fair bit of cash to part with to get a standard wrx up to an sti, from current experience. I'm actually mod'ing my 54 wrx at the moment but only taking it as far as a re-map.

thanks Bpm and Kedlestone for replying. its difficult to import high performance cars to my country. and there is a restriction to import cars older than 5 years as well... so my only way to get a sti is to buy an impreza and convert it.

what would be the most recent sti version that i can convert a 96 impreza to ?

And is the 96 impreza chassis the same as the 99 impreza's chassis?

As above chap, 92-2000. There's a checklist on here somewhere if you need a little help in what to look out for when buying a used scoob.

When you say "Impreza". do you mean a non-turbo car? If so, waste of time, effort and money converting that to a turbo car, let alone an STi.

Start with a WRX as a base at the very least.

even converting a wrx to an sti will take time and money to do it correctly, you would almost be changing everything.

dont set out to create an sti, just set out to make the wrx a better car.

Yes i was talking about the non-turbo car.

well. i found an impreza sti 5th version for sale. its the only original sti i found for my budget range!

well, now my question is, i hope to go to local drags with what ever im buying. and theres gonna be some recent STI versions and EVOs. I dont know much about STIs. is the 5th version enough to compete with recent versions? atleast with some modifications?

Good luck converting a non-turbo impreza to an sti. May aswell strip to a bare shell and start again.

90% will need changing including down to the wiring loom.
