engine light come on

I wanted to ask a couple of things, recently got a wrx import 94 plate. Firstly after getting the check engine light come on i plugged her in and was given code for throttle positioning sensor, changed this, but my local subaru specialist said that i had to run a voltage through it otherwise it may effect other things on the car???? Anyone have any idea what he is going on about, i guessed i could simply unscrew and put the newer throttle sensor in its place no probs. Secondly, the car revs to about 2000rpm when initial startup, then will drop quite low in some cases stalling, then go back up as though theres either a problem with the throttle sensor still or the idle switch? Once car warms up it settles to about 1000rpm.
Just hoping somone can help with this, could this be effecting my fuel consumption as she seems rather thirsty, evenmore than i would have expected. PS keep up the great work with the site, its a mecca for information :-) Gareth

Is car mapped for the mods? Can you clean the Idle Air Control Valve, the maf sensor, these can be cleaned with carb cleaner but dont use anything else to clean maf sensor as it very sensitive, can you put back on the standard dump valve? I'd reset ecu then and see how it goes
