Question 2005 Blobeye STi vs 2006 Hawkeye STi

Hi Guys

Ive not long sold my Honda S2000 in need to something with a bit more space. Ive always had a softspot for an Impreza ever since my old man used allow me drive his 1998 Classic Turbo.

Right to the point now anyway.

Ive done loads and loads of searching on various sites and still cannot find what I want to know.

Basically Im looking to buy either a 2005 Sti Blobeye or 2006 Hawkeye Sti.

From what I can gather the Hawkeye had the following changes:-
2.5L engine with lower torque/power band
Carbon Syncro's on 4,5 and 6 gears
Revised DCCD (yaw sensor and torque spilt slightly different)
I think minor suspension changes
Obviously cosmetic changes
Revised centre console and seats

So am I missing anything out??

Ive read that some people prefer the changes to the lazier engine for everyday drivability etc and some dont.

Overall tho whats the general concenseus?

Is the 2.5L better for possible future mods? I always thought cc count

My budget is right between the two lol
Seems you can get a decent blobeye for 10.5K - 11k
But I might be able to stretch to 12k ish for the hawkeye.

Sorry for the essay and no doubt this has been done to death but in a bit of a delema on which to go for.
Thanks
Alex

Re: 2005 Blobeye STi vs 2006 Hawkeye STi

Get a Hawk eye. After the classics, by far the best looking STi imo. Classics are great but they aint the most comfortable place to spend a few hours. Newer STi's are far more refined and also have stronger engines and gearboxes.

That being said, won't be swapping my classic anytime soon. Except for a Type RA-R (Hawk eye), the best Impreza ever built.

Hi Alex. I would get the Hawkeye. imo the best Impreza.

Hawkeye STi Type-UK gains over the Blobeye.
2.5 litre turbo with 281 PS and 289 lb ft torque – an increase of 16 PS and 36 lb ft. Revised gear ratios Revised symmetrical all-wheel drive system. New torque sensitive front limited-slip differential (LSD). Revised driver’s control centre differential (DCCD) with front/back torque distribution in auto mode of 41:59 (was 35:65 in the MY2005). Revised yaw rate sensor now improved with steering input. Improved driver and front passenger safety with the inclusion of side air bags.

Ok thanks for all the replies.

So apart form the engine would you say the suspension, diff changes, etc make it a better car?

Also concerning engine changes are both engines basically the same apart form the turbo and cc size?
Meaning bothe arnt forged like the JDM's are?

Re: 2005 Blobeye STi vs 2006 Hawkeye STi

Engines are very similar apart from size I believe. JDM cars have (and still have) the 2.0 litre engine so don't know much at all about the 2.5 I'm afraid. I have heard of problems with the 2.5 engine in the newer shape UK hatchback STi that the JDM 2.0 litre doesn't seem to suffer from, but don't think the Haw eye had the same issues.

Regarding the other changes Pete talks about, they do make the car better. Every little helps and in your situation I would definitely be buying the Hawk eye. I would also be buying JDM if i'm honest. Is JDM an option?

Well I would be tempted to go the JDM route but for a Hawkeye or even late blobeye they are considerably more expensive and hard to find.

That's a fair point. Add to that higher insurance and the cost/difficulty of getting parts (Subaru UK won't get parts for you.) then owning a JDM can be an expensive business.

A UK Hawkeye/Blobeye STi will still be one hell of a car. Hawkeye will just be a little bit better and a wee bit more handsome.

The 2.5 cannot be as highly tuned as the 2ltr without changing pistons etc.

Thats the kinda info I was after.
So has the 2.0l engine got better internals for tuning?

So therefore is the 2.0l better to tune to 400hp with the better internals or does the extra cc of the 2.5 make it more reachable before full engine rebuilds.
