whats the best engine?

I'm looking at getting a WRX, maybe an 02 , 05 or 06. So whats the best engine. The 2.0 or the 2.5?

Re: whats the best engine?

both engines are equal in standard guise,on the 2.0,depends if the block,is open, semi or closed deck as to how much power it will take,i belive it's likewise with the 2.5..

Re: whats the best engine?

2.5 will be semi closed, 2.0 open deck, assuming its a the standard block

Re: whats the best engine?

Interesting question

Driven and owned both types.... the 2.5 was more torquey... but less willing to rev quickly...

They are both great engines..

Sorry cant be more help

They are both equally thirsty and both able to be tuned....

and one that does not go bang bang oops!

Re: whats the best engine?

yeah, my 53 plate STI lasted 9 months before it went bang and Subaru wouldn't repair it under warranty even though there was clearly a fault with the valves, not that I'm bitter ! Hey I bought another didn't I

Re: whats the best engine?

The 2.5 does not have the distinctive burble, but that can be overcome with a different exhaust. The seats are grey on the bolsters on the 2.5 as oposed to black on the 2.0. Alloys are different too. also 2.5 WRX with a re-map is insanely torquey but 2.0 WRX isn't.

Re: whats the best engine?

the burble is to do with exhaust manifold shape/design not the exhaust. Some 2 litres also have no burble - mine doesn't. Interior and exterior looks vary according to 'editions' and not necessarily engine size or age.

Re: whats the best engine?

The 2.5 WRX with a remap is a cracking car - just add a slightly bigger turbo and you have got 340/350 bhp (and 360lbft+) with decat exhaust and one that sounds awesome.

Take a lot to get a 2.0 WRX to that.

But I would always go for the STi version - it gives you so much more scope for future mods...

Re: whats the best engine?

as with what tom said the noise is a bit different.
my standard 2.5 sounded different to my mates standard 2.0.
the only way i can describe it is the 2.5 sounded smoother and less blubblublubb.
but thats nothing a full decat didnt sort out.

as for driving differences i'd say minimal.. 2.5 feels a bit more torquey but the revs dont seem as 'free'. if that makes sense.

Re: whats the best engine?

The free revving feel is just caused by the turbo choice on there. The TD04 on the wrx is tiny and really runs out of puff, even the VF43 on the 2.5 does this to a degree but strap a man sized turbo on a 2.5 built engine and they rev just lovely. Mine hits 8000 (and over)
