Not really sure what you mean there, but sounds to me like something that absolutely should not be happening in any Impreza let alone a Type RA.

By all means go and take a look at this car but make sure you take somebody that knows a bit bout about cars (and preferably Imprezas). If you are not 100% happy then walk away. If you buy a lemon it could end up costing you a fortune in repairs and parts in the long term. Download this form and go through it when looking at the car. Also make sure the engine is cold when you get there.

Subaru Impreza - Buying Checklist

I think you would be well served by browsing a few Impreza forums and doing a bit of research before taking the plunge. There are a lot of cars out there, and with the economy the way it is, it is a buyers market so don't buy the first car you see as you could end up regretting it if you rush in.

Best of luck mate.

Re: please please advise

The DCCD (driver controlled center diff) NEVER cuts power to any wheel. You set it depending on how much power you want to send to the front/rear and off you go. Only way to shift power around is to do it manually but that still only affects the F/R split of power. He may be talking about 'Diff WInd', which is a knocking noise caused when the diff is set towards the LOCK positon (50/50 power split). This is a normal phenomenon of the DCCD and nothing to worry about, but is nothing to do with cutting power to anywhere.

I still advise you hold off for now and do some research into Imprezas and in particular Type R's an Type RA's so you know what you are buying. . There are a lot of cars out there (and a lot of lemons) and you can afford to take your time and find a good 'un. Just don't rush in and buy the first car you find.

Oh, and re the FMIC, I would personally get a re-map to ensure safe running, but others may disagree.

Walk away and keep your money safe.... there are plenty of fish in the sea, get someone who knows about Scooby's to go with you... then look at plenty before you take the leap

Re: please please advise

Get a Type RA.

There are 3 classic RA owners on the site regularly so feel free to pick our brains.

I have a lot of info on Japanese Models, and in particular Type RA's, I can also read Japanese if you need any help in that department.
