buying advice please

Hi Guys,

I aim to buy a Subaru Impreza soon.
I currently have a Mitsubishi FTO GPX and would be trading it in against the new car.

I am working on the assumption that i will get about 1500 for the FTO which is in very good condition.

So with the trade in, i will have about 3000 - 4000 to spend.

I would prefer the STI but WRX would also be fine, the saloon, not the estate though.

So far the only cars i have seen in my price range have been 1995-1997 models, some of them very nice looking though.

Please can you tell me, as im very new to subarus, is the STI the better model, or the WRX? and why? are the 1995 - 1997 cars still any good, do they suffer from any common problems. Whats the fuel consumption like on these cars?

I'm 32 with 11 yrs no claims, the fto is group 18, what is the insurance likely to be on a 1996 WRX? I pay 414 full comp at the moment.

Otherwise any general info would be appreciated.

thanks.

Re: buying advice please

WRX/STI will mean group 19-20 whilst the UK classic to my memory is 17. Depending on how you drive you will see low teens to mid 20s MPG that is, STIs from 95-97 you d be looking at an import and there are some very good ones about, how accurate their history etc is would be another thing. I have a bugeye 2002 wrx myself, love it. If u could go to 4.5-5 I bet you would get a really good UK WRX as the prices of scoobys really has dropped some. Plenty about so dont rush in until your ultra happy with what your looking at, FSH essential, check the running gear etc, if you get a good one and keep up the servicing then happy days.

Re: buying advice please

cheers for that.

the info on there lists the 1996 model as the first one with the spec listed.
was the 1994 - 1995 model roughly the same? or was it not a true impeza wrx/sti before 1996?

do you think it would be false econemy going for a 1995 car these days really?
would i have to expect to replace a lot of components, like the turbo, clutch, alternator etc?

would really love a subaru, but maybe i should just save a year or 2 more and get a later one.

Aren't the 2001 ones 400 to tax though?

All depends what the previous owners are like with the car bud you get new cars with problems all depends the way they are driven and looked after you could pick up a version 2 sti with the right service history and well looked after and a 2003 sti might have never been looked after and neglected all luck really but always bring a mechanic with you before you buy in the trade myself and you wouldnt believe how many people get caught out and buy a lemon
