Test Drive - 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX STI (What to look for?)

Hey Everyone,

I'm new to the forums so firstly I would like to say hello! :-)

I'm test driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STI (UK Spec) this weekend, its a 2003, its done around 50,000 miles and totally standard (260BHP).

As I'm not mechanically savvy what so ever, I would appreciate any advice that would help me decide the car is safe to buy. I spoke to the seller, and it has a full service history, and I checked the service intervals which appear to correspond with a recommended list I obtained from euro-spec2000.co.uk (7500, 15000, 30000, 45000 etc). The car has also had its cambelt done late last year. (I will double check this when I get to the seller.

I will also check for tappet noise, oil leaks, clutch slipping / juddering and drop link noise during the drive.

Is there anything else that you guys/girls would recommend? I've had nothing but car trouble with a cheap run around for the past year and I'm keen to get something that will not let me down. Also, past experience when I was young and bought a rusty old XR2 and RS Turbo caused me nothing but trouble and expense.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated and if you need any further information please let me know.

All the best - James.

Also check out the rear suspension, had a problem with the struts failing.

If you puch down on a rear corner and it appears to stick, the struts have failed and will need replacing.

Thanks JD for the help. I will check that when I get to the seller.
