ok, i have a vectra SRi estate, 2.5 V6. its tuned up to around the 200bhp.

im thinking of getting a little corsa as a run around and an impreza for some fun.

thing is, i dont know anything about them. can someone point me in the direction of any common faults, what to look out for, what they are like.....

any advice would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

ok thanks for that.
was told the knock link sensor is prone to going on the turbo models, dont trust the guy so think he is talking **** but is there any truth in it?

what are they like to drive, most of my cars have been vauxhalls, and most under 2.0L N/A so other than my V6 i aint really driven anything with any power, but the vectra aint good at handling and is very low torque so doesnt really have any kick.

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

also, i have noticed lots of variations of models, what are the main differences between them, and what sort of spec would i expect to find for around the 1.5-2k?
also is there much difference with the imports, both spec and insurance?

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

Morning fella, ok if you're looking to spend up to 2k then you're looking at a classic model around 1994 to 1998ish. I expect you'll find a lot of imports in this category too. Have a look through some of the thread on this site and you'll find lots of discussion about which is the best Impreza. A lot of people will say the classic is the one to have, including me !!
As regard to an import being an good, well, this comes doen to who you talk to. I've got an import as have thousands of others and they are fine. I've also have a UK STI and had some trouble with it. The import is generally harder to insure (again look around on the site for tips) with only specialists catering for the grey import market. My insurance on my modified WRX is 396 fully comp.
I would recommend that you get down to a show room and book a few test drives, the Impreza is amazing to drive and very very different to what you are used to looking at your previous comments.
Much like yourself my Scooby is a weekend car, a bit of fun, but they are also great as an every day car so don't rule that one out too. Keep it off the turbo and drive normally and you won't notice too much difference, i expect it would be better than your 2.5l Vectra.

Hope this helps.

thanks for that, 396 fully comp sounds very good, thats what i pay roughly for my v6.
yeah i was looking at the early one, mainly as there seem to be loads around and i dont have a huge amount of money to spend.
are the parts the same for uk and imports or would it be harder to get import parts?
are all impreza turbso 4wd? also i think i read somewhere they have coilover suspension as standard, is this true, if so is it adjustable?

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

For the insurance, I posted a thread a few weeks ago you can find it in my profile somewhere.
There is always the worry that parts are unavailable in the UK for imports, but I've never had any problems. There are so many specialist companies now and also breaker yards that I've always found what I need.
Jap cars often have a better spec too, mine is a 1995 and I have electric folding mirrors, something you might not expect to find.
A lot of Jap imports are already modified so you may well find coilovers, some of the mods on my car where done in Japan but mine hasn't got coilovers. I'm going for braces, bushes and anti sway bars rather than coilovers. It's a slower process of changing one thing at a time and stopping when I find the setup I want.

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

ok, found a scooby i like, but the thing is, the number plate isnt being recognised on any insurance sites. i checked on the dvla's tax site and it says its taxed, made in 1995 first registered in 2003.
does anyone know why it wouldnt show up on insurance sites?
also does anyone know of any way you can check the spec with just the number plate?

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

I've found my import doesn't come up on comparason sites. you just have to enter the details like engine size, year, no. of doors etc. and then you can choose your model from a list.

Re: thinking of getting an impreza

thanks for all your advice.

now i no this is an imprza forum, and this is probably a bit cheeky, but can someone give me some inpartial advice.

basically i have narrowed it down to 3 cars i like, the classic impreza turbo (either wrx or sti), a mitsubishi lancer evo 4 or a r33 nissan skyline 2.5 single turbo. has anyone owned any of these if so, pros and cons for all would be helpfull

sorry again i this seems rude on an impreza based forum

A buddy had an Evo 4 great car but he had a few problems with the AYC in it and transfer box went in it not cheap he sold it after that put he does drive them hard his cars another buddy had the 2.5 gts r33 skyline fast car his was tuned to 280bhp proven and god the back is lively in them he put a 2way diff in it he couldnt control it at all so he went to 1.5way diff but the r33 great and a raw car. If you going for the Evo id go for the 5 looks nicer
