Hi wsw,
Think the outback you refer to is the legacy which is a station wagon / hatch back depending on which side of the pond your on, which side are you on - could help some, as, if your in the states there are several guys on here that can help more. By last generaton are you refefing to the series 2 "Bug Eye" model? Dont regognisr the RS and L, thinking more now that your stateside, correct? buzz |

The Outback was offered in two flavors here in the USA; the Legacy Outback and the Impreza Outback. After Subaru decided that was confusing, they switched to the Outback (the Legacy Outback) and the Outback Sport (Impreza Outback). Both models were based upon the standard models in the line (Legacy L and Impreza L respectively) and given two-tone paint schemes, higher, stiffer suspensions, and other amenities. The Impreza L is the base model Impreza in the USA during the 1993-2001 model years. It has no power windows, no power locks, no standard AC, etc- just your basic Impreza

Check the engine size - if you're getting a used Impreza.
The RS was the first to get the 2.5L engine, while the L was running a 2.0L. RS also has 'stiffer' suspension (for better handling, although some prefer the smoother, gentler suspension of the L) The Outback Sport has slightly different tires (perhaps better for gravel or dirt than paved highway). Older models may have a 1.8L. All are 'boxer' style, and should be quite solid. Check service manual for timing belt change intervals (some were 60,000 Mi. and newer ones are 100,000 Mi.). |
