Newbie help, engine check light on...

Hi there

im after a little advice help etc. Just bought an 02 impreza turbo and dont really know a lot about them, I needed a 4 door car and had an s3 before.

Always liked imprezas as this one is Mica blue( anyone know the code?) with silver alloys so quite understated.

When I was driving it today the check engine light came on and stayed on. How do I know what the fault is plus where can I go to get it fixed? Im in Cumbria North west.

Plus any other tips are appreciated.

Steve

Hi Mate.

Not too sure on the check procedure for new age Imprezas, but I think that unless you have a a gizmo (again not sure what it is. sorry) that you can plug in to the port ( on classics under the steering wheel, new age ) that can read the codes and tell you what they are, then it is probably a trip to Subarau to get a diagnosis of the fault I'm afraid. I'll have a check around and see if i can find more info for you.

On calssics you could read them yourself by connecting a set of wires under the dash, but unfortunately Subaru made no money from this so now you can't.

You could go to the dealership and have them the pull code for you. Also I know ScanGauge has a a device called Scangauge meter that monitors engine vitals as well as give you CEL codes and they sell it for almost 150 U.S. dollars. Other than that I would suggest going to the dealership just to be on the safe side.

Best way to do it baring in mind Scooby's are new to you is as has been suggested, get down to your local subaru stealership or scooby specialist workshop and get them to tell you why the CEL light is on. If it was me i would go to a specialist, and it only takes a couple of mins to diagnose the CEL. If you were near me i would just plug my laptop in and show you what it says, then clear the CEL light by doing a reset.

If it's a serious issue or a sensor gone down then the CEL will come back on almost straight away and will stay on until you get that issue fixed, and then the ECU is reset again. Thre must be someone near you that can sort it out.

Hi. you will need to plug into diagnostic machine, its the only way! i have the correct machine but i'm in the durham 'north east' area. i have a website subaru impreza o2 oxygen lambda sensor. o.e.spec. best prices - Home if you find the code contact me through there and i'll tell you what the fault is. don't worry though it could be next to nothing.

Your nearest dealer will be Stan Palmer in Carlisle. Kendal Motor Village use to have a subaru dealership but now only deal in Honda & Citreon. Hope this helps.

Its hard to tell, a lot of the readers will only do that..they won't reset! i looked at a 02 wrx the other week and once the faulty sensor was sorted the check light stayed on until it was plugged back in, they don't all reset automatically. just something to bear in mind.

Umm strange...

Ok so I posted regarding the light on my engine management staying on.

Well today bizarre.... This morning I noticed there wasnt much coolant in the header tank so I drained and flushed the cooling system and replaced with decent coolant and water mix.

While I was doing this I greased lubed everything and double checked everything over, oh and cleaned it......

Hey presto no more engine management light... Weird... Any ideas why Its gone?

Its great but just wondered why?
