2008 Impreza - Frozen/Broken Wiper Arm

After our first winter snow storm and a temperature of -23 degrees celcius I cleared away the ice and snow from the wiper blades and arm (pulling the arms away from the windshield). What I failed to notice was the ice buildup on the lower part of the wiper arm very close to the pivot point which is almost out of sight. This ice build up caused a major failure in one wiper and the car requires dealership repair/replacement to wiper motor. The location and design of the lower part of the wiper arm is prone for ice buildup so just something to watch out for.

Thanks - Tony

I think I may have had the same thing happen to me. If you suspect stormy weather, make sure windshield wipers are in the down (resting) position when you leave the car. (Perhaps a bonehead mistake on my part)

Same here for our 08'. Cleared the window, but not the lower area and now the drivers side is broken (free moving). Can I replace just the gear box OR complete assembly with motor? Any $ discount part supplier?

Thanks,
Steve

I just had the same problem. After further investigating, it was a loose nut holding the drivers side wiper arm. A good thing to check by pulling the cap off where the wiper arm connects to the motor and feel the shaft for rotation with wipers on. Stop the wiper(s) in the resting (down) position, line up the arm and tighten nut.
