I did mine myself, wasnt too hard just time consuming. Took me 8 or 9 hours. The hardest part was cutting the front bumper - must have taken a couple of hours at least just for that.
The benefit i find most is that you dont get the loss of power after idling for a while and the car pulls a little bit more eagerly during normal driving. You might get a little bit more turbo lag though although this is minimal and i dont notice it.

You will benefit more from it if you get the car mapped to suit though.

Try going on to Andy Forest's web site. It tells you about different tuning benifits etc. I wanted to take mine up to him in Scotland to get a re-map done but changed my car instead so never bothered. I have never used him but I have heard he is one of the top men for subaru re-maps. I am sure when I was on his site he goes on about front mounted intercoolers?????

your wallet dont lol

the lag side of front mounts is a bit of a myth. you compare how much air the turbo pumps with the volume in the pipe work and intercooler its next to nothing.

the thingcommonly mistaken fro lag is in fact an incompatability between the frontmount and the maf, mapping can remove this in some case, or at least reduce it.

however go aftermarket ecu, and use a map sensor instead of a maf sensor and there's no lag at all.

there was all sorts of talk on SN about it, people coming on saying this and that, there was, untill recently only 1 back to back test and it showed no lag issues at all, but a vast improvment on inlet temps.

then a chap on SN called NS04 switch his top mount for a front mount. the only difference bewteen before and after was ther intercooler, all other mods were the same, it was mapped by the same guy.

and guess waht, no lag issues whatso ever.

just goes to show how people's assumtions can lead you astray

if you run to the cost, then front mount is by far the better option, no mater what power your running.

only exception is when your running a TD04, cos its such a small turbo it can suffer from lag in filling the larger air volume. but even this tends to be very mininmal
