the standard uk gearbox will handle 350bhp
you say you want 350-400bhp if thats what you want dont use a uk turbo engine
get yourself a import sti type r engine and gearbox as you start with 280bhp as standard
much easier to get 400 from this as engine and gearbox is much stronger
As a minimum i recommend forged pistons
and steel rods, steel head gaskets and uprated clutch.
a dected exhaust and airfilter will get you over 300bhp
a bigger turbo, injectors and a remapable ecu will cost you around £2000 but will get you to 400bhp
i would also upgrade the intercooler as a lower charge temp will help you achieve higher bhp
But bhp is not the be all and end all its the torque you want aswell
have a chat with this guy hes one of the best in the tuning business his site will give you some ideas for power aswell

Dear dasco Thank you for your information
However I would like to ask:
when you speak of the standard gearbox you mean the standard STI version or the standard 2.0 l turbo which is normally tuned to around 210 bhp
thank you

getting a reliable 400 isn't that easy. and tbh not much of a jump from 400-450

have a look at www.scoobyclinic.com, they do an off the shelf sc450, which is running roughly 450bhp and 480ftlb.

the gearbox wont cope full stop. at that sort of power you need a new age 6 speed or a 5 speed ppg gearset (whats in mine).

all in all, including clutch your looking at about 12 grand + vat.

getting 400bhp and reliable aint easy by any stretch

Before you put your hand in your pocket and seek a 300+ bhp engine......

Do you know the approximate weight of the kit car you intend to build, and if so what bhp per tonne do you want?
Will a standard Import sti engine be enough for a starting point?
You're not keeping a 4wd set up - so are you going to first uprate your differentials and drive shafts?
I'm not sure you'll need 300+ bhp in a car that weighs under a tonne, with rear wheel drive in a tubular space frame chassis.
Comparitively a Caterham 7 CSR 200 has a kerb weight of about 600kg, has a normaly aspirated 2296cc engine, a bhp of 200 and (using the only comparison league I can think of right now) it - as I remember, lapped the top gear track ahead of the likes of an AUDI RS4, a Mitsubushi evo VIII , and many more 'supercars'.

I'd buy the kit, put it all together with a standard lump from an STI import perhaps, get used to the car and take it from there. Twelve grand is a shed load to spend on an engine - which might not suit the car.

Well the kit is based on a toyota mr2 (1992) donor car and will have all the parts from it except for the chassis body panels and glass. The kit body is made of fibre glass.
So I estimate that it is a little bit lighter than a toyota mr2 but will still weigh in at around a tonne
